Is WARDOGS Worth It? Review Trend, Pay-to-Win and Refunds, Judged

Three million sales, a review score down to Mostly Positive and a written no-pay-to-win pledge. We judge if WARDOGS is worth buying in Season 2, refunds included.

FAQ

Is WARDOGS worth it in Early Access?
For players who want a 100-player, three-team squad shooter and accept an unfinished game, the evidence still says yes, with a caveat. On 20 October 2026 the English-language review panel read Mostly Positive at 75.5% of 82,327 reviews (Very Positive at 81.5% on 27 September), the studio's 9 October post says "3+ million sales and counting", and the store carries a written pledge that cash, gold bars and camos will never be sold. The counterweights are Early Access realities: Season 2 went live on 15 October and the studio itself says its wipe "never really landed", the price is planned to rise during Early Access, and online-only design rules out solo or offline play.
Is WARDOGS pay-to-win?
At the store level the developer has put the opposite in writing: "We will NOT monetize the game at any point during Early Access", "We will NEVER monetize in-game cash or gold bars, they must be earned through play" and "We will NEVER allow you to directly purchase camos." We re-read that text on 20 October and it is unchanged. The only paid DLC is a $12.99 cosmetics pack. Two honest limits: the pledge covers Early Access only, and it says nothing about whether classes and vehicles feel balanced in a match — the studio itself named faction balance as a known problem on 20 September.
Can I refund WARDOGS on Steam?
Under Steam's published refund terms, a purchase is refundable if you request it within 14 days of buying and have played under 2 hours. These are platform-wide terms, not a Bulkhead policy, and nothing official for WARDOGS narrows or extends them as far as anything we could check on 20 October. Early Access status does not change the rule. Spend your first two hours testing what bothers you most — server queues, faction balance, transport vehicles — rather than grinding one familiar loadout.
Is WARDOGS dead?
No. Steam's own player-count endpoint returned 139,463 players in game at 13:17 UTC on 20 October 2026, Season 2 shipped on 15 October, and the studio's 9 October post says "3+ million sales and counting". What is true is that launch-record numbers did not last: third-party trackers put the all-time peak between 402,686 and 428,666 (they disagree) and the 24-hour peak near 226,000 at 11:22 UTC on 20 October, and the studio wrote "we know this hype won't last forever". A single reading is a time-of-day number, not a trend, so every figure on this page carries its read time.
Why did the WARDOGS review score drop?
The English-panel score went from 85% on 14 September to 84% on 21 September, 81.5% on 27 September and 75.5% on 20 October, and the label fell from Very Positive to Mostly Positive; all languages combined sit at 71.0%, also Mostly Positive. About 60% of the roughly 23,000 English reviews written since 27 September were positive (our own subtraction from two pulls), which is why the cumulative score keeps sliding. The timing overlaps Season 2's launch on 15 October and the studio's own 17 October post saying Season 2 "hasn't felt like" a fresh start for many players. We can note the overlap; we cannot prove the cause, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Is the Supporter Edition worth the extra $10?
It buys cosmetics and supports the studio: when we priced the US store on 20 October the Supporter Edition sat at $49.99 against the $39.99 base game, and the separately listed $12.99 Supporter Pack contains three weapon camos, a helicopter camo, a scoreboard icon and two trinket cosmetics — no currency, no XP, no unlocks. If you like the camos, fine; if you are buying it expecting an advantage, there is none for sale.
Should I buy now or wait for Season 3 or 1.0?
The published pricing plan points one direction: "we may raise the price closer to full release", and a 23 September interview relayed a target of $49.99 around twelve months in and $59.99 about a year after that (Reported). If you buy, buying earlier costs less. Season 2 is live, so waiting for it no longer buys anything. What is still open is progression: on 17 October @WARDOGS said it is looking at bringing Season 3 forward, with no date and no second-wipe schedule announced, and whether your progress survives to 1.0 has never been answered in writing. Version 1.0 sits one to two years out per the store page.

“Is it worth it?” is a different question from “how long is Early Access?” The Early Access fact sheet on this site answers the contract questions — duration, price ladder, what the store page promises in writing. This page answers the quality question: whether the game is good enough today, whether it nickel-and-dimes you, and what happens if you regret the purchase. If you are new to the game itself, what is WARDOGS is the one-page definition.

Both pages share one method: every number is read from a first-hand source and dated. Nothing here is a vibe, a review-bomb echo, or a hype echo. This page was first written on 27 September and re-checked on 20 October, after Season 2 went live.

The Review Trend, Read Honestly

Four readings of the English-language panel, all pulled from Steam’s own review endpoint:

DateEnglish panelReading
14 September 202685% of 30,763Very Positive
21 September 202684% of 45,949Very Positive
27 September 202681.5% of 59,236Very Positive — closer to the line
20 October 202675.5% of 82,327Mostly Positive — the label dropped

Two honest observations. First, the label has moved: the English panel read Very Positive on 27 September and reads Mostly Positive now, joining the all-language aggregate. Second, the direction has been one-way across all four readings. Between 27 September and 20 October the English panel gained about 23,100 reviews and roughly 13,900 of them were positive — about 60%, against a cumulative 75.5%. That is simply the arithmetic of why the score keeps sliding (our own subtraction of two pulls, not a Steam statistic, so treat it as Reported). The pace slowed as well: about 1,000 new English reviews a day since 27 September, against about 2,200 a day in the week before.

What the number does not tell you is what the game is like at this hour. For that, this site’s play-side pages stay useful: the beginner guide, the best class breakdown and the game mode scoring walkthrough describe mechanics, not moods.

Sales, Momentum and the “Is It Dead” Question

The sales record, all official: 1.25 million copies announced 11 September, 2 million on 15 September (Steam news gid 1843481262705755), 3 million on 26 September (gid 1844751498227777) — “in just over 2 weeks since launching into Early Access” — and, in the 9 October Season 02 Preview (gid 1846018067933823), “3+ million sales and counting”. No newer sales figure had been announced on 20 October. The 26 September post also carried a community-voted Golden Joystick nomination for Best Early Access Game 2026.

Against that, the “dead game” posts, which usually set one evening’s count against the launch-weekend peak. Both things can be true at once, because they measure different things: a launch that peaked among the highest concurrent counts of the year will fall from that peak, and the studio has said so itself. The 3-million announcement opens with “We know this hype won’t last forever”, and a 20 September interview relay (gid 1844115010499261) had the studio saying it does not expect record-level player counts to hold permanently.

Here is what a dated reading looks like on 20 October. Steam’s own player-count endpoint returned 139,463 players in game at 13:17 UTC; the same endpoint had returned 102,011 at 10:59 UTC and 108,226 at 11:22 UTC, so one number is a time-of-day reading, not a trend. At 11:22 UTC, tracker.gg and SteamCharts both listed a 24-hour peak of about 226,000 (Reported, third-party). The all-time peaks disagree with each other — 428,666 on tracker.gg and wardogshub.gg, 402,686 on SteamCharts — and we have no first-hand evidence for why. Whichever you trust, the 24-hour peak is a little over half of the all-time peak, and every reading from Steam’s own endpoint that day was above 100,000.

The verdict on “dead”: no. A game is dead when updates stop and servers empty — this one shipped a major season on 15 October, has a patch pipeline we mirror on the Update 0.2.0 patch notes and Season 1 patch notes pages, and has a review panel still in a positive band. What is fair to say: the launch-window surge is over by design, and a turbulent Season 2 week has cost the game review points. Anyone buying for record queues today is buying the wrong week.

Why the Number Moved Since 27 September

The first slide, from 14 to 27 September, overlapped two relayed stories: a 22 September report that Season 2 would reset progress and a 23 September interview outlining price rises (both Reported). The slide since then overlaps four events, in order:

  1. 9 October — Season 02 Preview (Official, gid 1846018067933823). The studio previewed new weapons, vehicles, buildings, rain and faction experiments, and said “3+ million sales and counting”.
  2. 15 October — Season 2 goes live (Official, gid 1846651706677015). Update 0.2.0 shipped with large economy and combat changes; the numbers that matter for a buyer are in the next section, and the full tables are on the patch notes page.
  3. 16 October — course corrections (Reported). PCGamesN and Rock Paper Shotgun reported the studio ending Season 2’s Lonestar (blue team) cash and XP bonus experiment after a single day, with the CEO saying “We were wrong”, and removing a Driver progression exploit.
  4. 17 October — @WARDOGS on X (Official). The studio wrote that Season 2 “was meant to be a fresh start, and for a lot of you it hasn’t felt like one”, said progression had been sped up on purpose and that “the wipe never really landed”, ruled out a knee-jerk reset that weekend, and said it is looking at bringing Season 3 forward. The details are on the wipe page.

What Season 2 Changed for the Buying Decision

These are the official old-to-new values from the Season 2 patch notes (gid 1846651706674560), not in-game measurements:

  • Levelling is faster. Cumulative Role Track XP for level 20 fell from 250,000 to 111,500; the patch says reaching level 20 now takes under half the time.
  • Cash is tighter. Deploying a supply pallet pays $1,250 instead of $2,500, and the top vehicles got dearer: the L2A6 tank went from $14,000 to $22,000 and the Havoc attack helicopter from $18,000 to $28,000.
  • Combat was retuned. Base damage fell by 16–25% depending on calibre, and level 3 and level 4 armour now cut 50% and 60% of damage (from 55% and 65%).
  • New content. Four weapons, four vehicles, three buildings and a rain weather preset; the Wager Vendor was not available at launch.

For a buyer that means the climb to the good gear is shorter and the cash to afford it is harder to earn — and the studio has called the deliberate speed-up a wrong call in hindsight (Official, 17 October). It does not change the review numbers above, but it is why this page no longer reads “wait for Season 2”.

The Pay-to-Win Verdict

The store-level argument ends with a written pledge, first quoted on our Early Access page and repeated here because it is the single most load-bearing sentence set in this whole debate (Supporter Pack description, re-read on 20 October):

“There will be no monetization on WARDOGS during Early Access with the sole exception of this optional supporter edition. … To be extra clear on BULKHEAD’s stance re: monetization. 1. We will NOT monetize the game at any point during Early Access. 2. We will NEVER monetize in-game cash or gold bars, they must be earned through play. 3. We will NEVER allow you to directly purchase camos.”

The ellipsis skips nothing but the DLC’s own cosmetic item list — three weapon camos, a Littlebird “Taxi” camo, a scoreboard icon and two trinket cosmetics. No currency, no XP, no unlock shortcuts. The store’s feature rows carry no in-app purchase category, and the $12.99 price tag on the Supporter Pack was re-read on 20 October.

Two limits keep this from being a perfect answer:

  • The pledge is scoped to Early Access. “At any point during Early Access” and “NEVER” are strong words, but they are words about this phase of the game, and the same interview relay that promises price rises shows the studio is comfortable adjusting its terms over time. Watch what 1.0 ships with.
  • No store text can settle in-match fairness. Whether one faction, class or vehicle steamrolls another is a design question. The studio’s own 20 September known-issues list (faction balance, transport vehicles) is the honest answer to “is the game balanced?” — that is a different complaint from pay-to-win, and the best class page follows the meta as it shifts.

One adjacent scam to flag: sites selling cheap “gift keys” or boost services rank for exactly these searches. A key from a grey market is not a discount — it is a ban risk with extra steps, as documented in our cheats, hacks and scam warning.

Refunds: Steam’s Rule and the Two-Hour Test Plan

Steam’s published refund terms are the same for this game as for any other: request within 14 days of purchase, with under 2 hours played. These are platform terms, not Bulkhead’s — and as far as everything we could check on 20 October shows, nothing official for WARDOGS narrows or extends them. (The fine print and edge cases live on Steam’s refund page.)

That two-hour clock is why the refund question is really a question about your first evening. If you are on the fence, spend the window testing the things most likely to bother you, not learning one loadout:

  1. The queue and the netcode. Connection problems were the launch weeks’ top complaint; our connection and server troubleshooting page lists what is fixable on your end versus not.
  2. Both sides of a match. Faction balance is the studio’s own named known issue. Play the other side before hour two, not after refund o’clock.
  3. Transport vehicles. The other officially named sore spot. If hauling and driving frustrate you, that will not improve by wishing.
  4. The reset math. Season 2 wiped cash and XP by Bulkhead’s own account, and on 17 October the studio said it is looking at bringing Season 3 forward — no Season 3 date and no second-wipe schedule exist (Unannounced). Decide whether you enjoy the matches without caring what carries over.

The forward-looking numbers are Reported, from the 23 September interview relay: roughly $49.99 around version 0.5 (about twelve months in), $59.99 about a year after that. No store text confirms an amount or a date — the store only says Early Access is “priced lower… with a higher price at full release”. The full quote-by-quote contract, including what 1.0 plans to add, lives on the Early Access duration and price page.

Who Should Buy, Who Should Wait

What Would Change This Verdict

This page is dated 20 October 2026, Season 2 (Update 0.2.0). It gets rewritten when any of these happen, and each has a concrete trigger:

  1. Season 3 details. The studio promised a dev vlog for the week after 17 October; any date for Season 3 or a second wipe goes straight into the reset math above and onto the wipe page.
  2. A new patch. The next changelog goes to the patch notes page and re-opens the balance question.
  3. The review trend. If the English label changes again, the scorecard above changes with it — the four-row trend table is the thing to re-read.
  4. Any monetisation announcement that touches gameplay. The pledge is Early Access-scoped; the first store SKU that sells power voids the pay-to-win verdict in one move.
  5. A written answer on progression carry-over. The Early Access page lists it as the biggest unanswered question, and it stays open.

Figures on this page were read on 20 October 2026 from the Steam appdetails endpoint (appid 1867240 and 4809960, region us: base $39.99, Supporter Edition $49.99, Supporter Pack $12.99, no discount; categories unchanged — no Family Sharing, no Single-player), the appreviews endpoint at 13:17 UTC (English panel 62,170/82,327 = 75.5%; all languages 90,949/128,141 = 71.0%) and the GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers endpoint (139,463 at 13:17 UTC; 102,011 at 10:59 UTC; 108,226 at 11:22 UTC). Announcement citations use ISteamNews gids: 1846651706677015 (15 Oct, Season 02 is live), 1846651706674560 (14 Oct, Season 02 patch notes), 1846018067933823 (9 Oct, Season 02 Preview, “3+ million sales and counting”), 1844751498227777 (26 Sep, 3 million sales + Golden Joystick nomination), 1844751498217571 (23 Sep, PlayGround.ru relay of a GamesRadar+ interview on price rises — Reported), 1844115010505346 (22 Sep, PlayGround.ru relay reporting a Season 2 reset — Reported), 1844115010499261 (20 Sep, known issues — Reported), 1844115010497100 (19 Sep, Family Sharing disabled — PCGamesN relay), 1843481262705755 (15 Sep, 2 million copies). The 16 October course corrections are PCGamesN and Rock Paper Shotgun reports (Reported); the 2 and 17 October statements are the CEO’s and @WARDOGS’s own X posts (Official). The 1.25M figure is the studio’s 11 September announcement as recorded in our verification notes. Steam refund conditions are platform-wide published terms, not a WARDOGS policy. Review-score causation claims are explicitly not made in this page. Early Access moves weekly: re-check the store page before quoting any figure.
